Faculty Ambassadors
The Committee on Faculty Resources is happy to announce the 2019-2020 Faculty Ambassadors sponsored by the Title III Removing Barriers to STEM Success Grant. Professional Development opportunities in the grant are open to all faculty, regardless of discipline. Faculty Ambassadors were selected for their interest in innovative teaching strategies with wide applications across campus disciplines. Thank you to all who applied. Applications for 2020-2021 Faculty Ambassadors will be announced next April. All SBCC faculty, full and part-time from all disciplines, are encouraged to apply. 2019-2020
- Melanie Eckford-Prossor from English/Honors has been selected to attend the Detroit Renaissance: Place as Text Faculty Institute, on 6/5/2019 to 6/9/2019. Melanie plans to return to campus to lead workshops in which teaching faculty pair across disciplines, exploring how their disciplines shape their assumptions about cities as texts, including SBCC and local cities for multidisciplinary context.
- Daniel Giles from-from Mathematics has been selected to attend TODOS-2020, 6/25/19/19 to 6/27/19. Daniel plans to return to campus and share with colleagues new and effective ideas to help students who struggle in mathematics as a foundation for all disciplines.
- Sara Kamali from Political Science has been selected to attend Engaging Social Justice for a Better World Conference, 9/9/19 to 9/14/19. Sara plans to return to campus and share new tools on how to foster inclusivity, encourage social justice learning, and represent a diverse pedagogy.
- Marit ter Mate-Martinsen from ESL has been selected to attend Training from the Back of the Room in Washington DC, on 8/7/19 to 8/8/19. Marit plans to return to campus to lead a workshop on six powerful learning principles based on the best of brain science.
- Raeanne L. Napoleon-from Chemistry has been selected to attend American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting- with emphasis on Chemical Education (CHED) technical programming and workshops, 3/22/20 to 3/26/20. Raeanne plans to return to campus and implement and share innovative teaching strategies, nanoscience research, in class and lab experiments.
2018-2019
- Thomas Carrasco from the Ethnic Studies Department has been selected to attend the American Studies Association Conference November 8-11, 2018. He plans to learn new methods and teaching modalities focusing on African American and Chicano students and inclusive teaching modalities for our students here at SBCC. He will return to SBCC to present these new teaching methods and modalities to his colleagues.
- Matt Mooney from the History Department has been selected to attend the Magna Teaching with Technology Conference October 5-7, 2018. He plans to learn the latest tools and pedagogy that employ technology to enhance online and on-campus teaching through engagement, discussion, feedback, instructor presence, community building, and course design, especially in the areas of 1) Active Learning 2) Learning Design 3) Student Assessment. Matt will share these best practices with his Santa Barbara City College colleagues through the FRC’s Teaching with Humanizing Technology class that he teaches. - Matt's presentation to CFR in Spring 2019
- Danielle Swiontek from the History Department has been selected to attend the International Mind, Brain and Education Society (IMBES) annual conference September 27-29, 2018. Neuroscience research seems to suggest that the pedagogy of higher education does not match the way that the brain learns. She plans to learn more about the neuroscience behind learning and present a workshop to her SBCC colleagues to share new neuroscience-based pedagogical tools, techniques, and strategies to facilitate student learning. - Brief Notes from the IMBES conference
